Els Kocken lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, since her return from 27 years of social development-, and humanitarian assistance in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. She is an anthropologist and a visual artist. The photo academy education (2013-2016) enabled her to pursue a career change and triggered her curiosity to explore other visual media. Kocken’s anthropology background and perceptions of past experiences shape her artwork to a large extent. Using drawing, painting and graphics in combination with her photography, playing with visual media become an adventure.
For Kocken the power of change in perspectives and the concept of No Condition Permanent are crucial in her thinking. On the one hand, change in perspectives can produce experiences of innovations and development. On the other hand, the continue change and temporary nature of facts and truths, disrupts , disaggregates, and aggravates. Kocken explores her own and others receptivity to such continuous change. These reflections are central to Kocken’s visual perception of the mindset of humans, and their echos in human forms.
Els Kocken woont en werkt in Amsterdam, sinds haar 27 jaar werkzaamheden in ontwikkeling-, en noodhulp programma’s in Afrika, Latijns-amerika , het Midden-Oosten en Azie. Zij is antropologe en beeldende kunstenaar. Met de fotoacademie (2013-2016) afronding heeft zij zich vooral op schilder- en grafische kunst toegelegd.
Het concept “No condition permanent” en de kracht van verandering in het (onder)vinden van nieuwe perspectieven , zijn een rode draad in Kocken’s denken en creaties . Aan de ene kant is er de positieve kijk op continue verandering tot vernieuwing en ontwikkeling. Aan de andere kant , in deze tijd waar feiten en waarheden van korte validiteit blijken te zijn, kan continue verandering ook ontwrichten. Deze reflecties staan centraal in Kocken”s visuele kijk op de mindset/identiteit van mensen, en de echos in hun gestalten.
Recent werk draait rond het proces van ergernis en verlies van controle. Met het hervormen van 2D etscollages tot 3D paper statues, ontstaan er verhalen rond ontwrichting/loslaten/vlucht.
Straat fotografie en digitale opnames van dans en jazz voorstellingen zijn veelal haar bron van inspiratie. Evenals verrassingen uit het mengen van etstechnieken zoals sugarlift, vernis mou, aquatint en open bite toepassingen. De paper statues zijn vaak gevoerd met houtskool modeltekeningen.
